Inspired by a chaotic building evacuation, Founder and CEO Darren Whitaker-Barnett thought there must be a smarter way to account for people in an emergency.
And so WhosOnLocation Version 1 was born – in the back of a combi van while Head of Technology Tom Peck was traveling around Croatia.
Right from the start we listened to every customer and took a hands-on approach. Bootstrapped and self-funded, we designed in the manner of the Lean Startup revolution that inspired us; building step-by-step, releasing often and learning from each product release.
Today our team is sitting in both our Wellington headquarters and our office in Houston, Texas. You’ll find WhosOnLocation in the US, Canada, the UK and 38 other countries around the world.
Our software is always evolving. We continuously improve our application responding to ever-changing technology and work environments whether by adding features, adapting to regional habits or integrating new smart notifications.

After experiencing a poorly-considered and chaotic evacuation, Darren Whitaker-Barnett’s vision was to create a tool that would make both people presence and evacuation management seamless.
In August 2012, Darren founded WhosOnLocation. The first version of the cloud-based visitor and evacuation management tool was built by Head of Technology Tom Peck – from the back of a combi van while traveling in Croatia. Leading the Finance and Marketing, Victoria Armstrong joined and the team became three.
By the end of the year, WhosOnLocation had 200 customer locations, had been voted a Red Herring Asia Top 100 innovator and had integrated with Tyco Fire and Alarm Monitoring to expand the product.
One year later, in December 2013, 1 million people had signed into a location using WhosOnLocation.
In January, the WhosOnLocation mobile app launched to both iOS and Android users. WolMobile is an extension of the desktop browser app, and is an even easier way to manage employee and contractor presence right from your mobile device.
WolEvac, the world’s first roll-call mobile app for employees, contractors, and visitors, was released later that year. Between March and June, the FTE staff members doubled from 3.5 to 7.
In May, we released the WhosOnLocation API, empowering our customers to leverage their visitor and customer data with external applications. We also launched WolPass, a feature that allows visitors to sign-in easily with their mobile phone.

Darren leads WhosOnLocation with a wealth of professional (and personal) experience under his belt.
Before he was 23 he had jumped out of a plane, started his first business, represented his country in sport, completed 30 hours flying time as a trainee pilot and created a TV commercial that aired on nationwide TV.
Prior to founding WhosOnLocation, Darren served on the management team at Meridian Energy, and has been directly responsible for building hundreds of millions of dollars of new revenues in the technology, FMCG and energy sectors.
Victoria is responsible for operations, finances and marketing and is based in our Houston office.
Prior to joining WhosOnLocation, Victoria had won the All Ireland Women’s Rugby cup, prospected and sold millions of dollars in advertising for TVNZ, and broken 11 bones (including her skull).
Victoria also founded the highly successful ‘Fit2Front’, a leading media training provider teaching CEOs of some of New Zealand’s most influential companies.
Tom is responsible for managing application innovation.
Before building WhosOnLocation, Tom was the Technical Lead at a successful London-based digital creative agency. In this tenure there, he managed a range of successful projects from simple promotional websites to complex online platforms servicing hundreds of thousands of visitors.
Outside of the office, Tom runs 80km per week to build up the stamina that will be required once his three young girls become teenagers.
Andrew manages all things server and hardware and brings to WhosOnLocation a wide range of skills in the IT space.
Andrew has extensive experience in deploying fast and robust internet services, from a single transaction right up to a load balanced multi-server solution.
With a passion for customers, driving results, a love of people and working together to achieve business objectives Bridie leads our marketing team.
Bringing a wealth of experience and knowledge from senior roles in high profile national organisations as well as successful start-ups within telecommunications, electricity and SaaS industries.
A lover of adventures and coffee and a miniature schnauzer called Moe.
Stacey is currently CEO of Noel Group Inc., a Houston, Texas based holding company. Stacey is a relationship oriented executive with over 35 years’ experience in business creation, development and acceleration; intellectual property creation and stewardship and business consulting acumen across multiple industry sectors. He has founded / co-founded 14 companies and assisted in growing numerous others in a collaborative win-win fashion.
Stacey serves on multiple boards in commercial and non-profit businesses and has served the Houston Technology Center in mentoring roles and screening committees in the energy and IT industries.
Paula brings a wealth of knowledge and global experience from cloud and traditional IT, telecommunications and banking sectors. She has held leadership and executive positions at ANZ, Spark (formerly Telecom), Vodafone and most recently Xero, where she was GM Marketing for 5 years.
As well as sitting on several boards, Paula has a consulting business, providing marketing, governance, advisory and mentoring expertise to a range of NZ based organisations including technology start-ups and early growth phase businesses as well as not for profits.
Matthew, from Deloitte Private, is our “Virtual” CFO sitting on our advisory board and exec team. He has wide ranging experience across finance, product, banking & technology. Originally from the UK, he has held diverse roles at a number of global businesses including: Lehman Brothers and Barclays. Since 2013 he has been Wellington based, and prior to joining Deloitte he held senior finance roles at StarNow and HumanKind.
Recent experience includes: board roles, sales and expansion strategy, establishing overseas offices, capital raise support, implementing new governance & controls structures.
