Why is WhosOnLocation migrating to AWS?

There are several improvements that have led us to this decision:

  • Enhanced Security – Protecting your data and security is always of the highest priority. AWS and the tools we use to manage our infrastructure let us take that commitment to the next level, with improved control, visibility and auditing of changes made within the infrastructure.
  • Better Scalability – AWS provides greater flexibility in how we monitor and scale our application and infrastructure to meet our customers needs and expectations.
  • Improved Flexibility – Public cloud providers such as AWS offer a range of technical capabilities which we can use to improve our capabilities, both in terms of delivering new features to our customers, as well as keeping the application running smoothly.
  • Infrastructure Certification – AWS is certified under the ASD Certified Cloud Services List (CCSL) for unclassified data.  This means that our hosting infrastructure meets global industry standards necessary for clients who operate in highly regulated industries.

Why did WhosOnLocation choose AWS?

AWS has already proven itself to be a robust platform for our US region servers. It makes sense for us to utilize more of what AWS can offer by migrating more of our infrastructure needs onto the AWS platform.

What is cloud computing?

Cloud computing is using a network of remote servers hosted on the Internet to store, manage, and process data, rather than a local server or a personal computer.

What does the move to AWS mean for me as a customer?

We are now able to spend more time innovating for you. We wanted to be able to provide our customers with more innovation across every aspect of WhosOnLocation and this includes our underlying technology.

  • NZ & AU – Asia Pacific (Sydney)
  • CA – Canada (Central)
  • EU – Europe (Frankfurt)
  • UKUnited Kingdom (London)
  • US – United States (N. Virginia)

I am in New Zealand, why is my data stored in Australia?

AWS Sydney provides the closest region to New Zealand and is widely used by New Zealand government and companies. For more information about New Zealand data protection click here.

Do I need to do anything?

No. The migration process will be transparent to our customers. Before the migration process you will be advised of a short window of unavailability, we will ensure this is scheduled to cause little disruption.
